LET’S TAKE A BREATH…AND ANOTHER ONE…AND ONE MORE…

The breath is at the core of life itself, and without it…We are not here.

In various ancient languages, the same word used for breath - for example prana in Sanskrit and pneuma in Greek - was also used for life force, energy, vital principle, spirit, and soul. In breathwork, we use our breath as the door to the body and the spirit, to better health, vitality, creativity, and purpose. If we can change how we breathe we can change how we feel and how we live!

Physiologically, the breath is fascinating because it is typically involuntary (normally controlled by the autonomic nervous system) but can also be consciously controlled and regulated. With this comes an opportunity to get into a relationship with our unconscious responses and influence our own nature and patterning on a very primal level. If we can bring the conscious and unconscious psyche together, the personal and the collective, the present and the ancestral history, the known and the unknown into a state of greater integration, this will nourish and amplify our conscious life, turning us into more whole, less fragmented beings.

Everything has light and dark and if we can embrace and integrate all parts, then we can become who we truly are, unashamedly. When we are able to love all parts of ourselves, then it becomes easier to love others in their totality as well...And life becomes more beautiful! Breathers often experience a sense of being reborn, as in a feeling of being free from past stories and conditioning, a sense of being new, clear, centered, and focused. This really is a journey home, reconnecting with ourselves and with our inherent source of health, wholeness, joy, love, curiosity, creativity, and courage.

WHAT HAPPENS IN A BREATHWORK SESSION

In a private session, we first have a consultation (ca. 15-20 mins) to talk through where you are at and any issues you are facing; we then move into the breathwork for ca. 30-50 mins and allow ca. 15 mins for grounding and integration at the end. I might also suggest a daily practice for you to cultivate in-between sessions. Group sessions normally include an introduction and frame to create a container for the group journey, a 30-40 mins breathwork, and we also allow time for grounding, sharing, and integration at the end.

During the breathwork, you can be lying down or sitting, depending on how you are most comfortable. I guide you with my voice and there’s also music to accompany the journey. As we breathe deeply for a period of time, CO2 and blood pH levels change, which can trigger a number of physical, mental, and emotional responses. Changes in body chemistry can cause tingling or numbing sensations, muscle contractions, lightheadedness, or changes in body temperature; you may experience involuntary motions or tremors in the body, which often indicate that the nervous system is discharging stress/tension/trauma. Furthermore, changes in brain waves can stimulate a deep meditative or dreamlike state; powerful emotions may rise to the surface; memories may come up, all the way from birth to the present moment; you may feel resistance or impatience, or you may find yourself checking out. With any sensations or emotions, it is all about allowing yourself to be open to what is emerging and compassionate with yourself, without trying to control your experience. It is important to trust that the breath will only lead you to experience what you are ready to explore. The breath is the anchor for being with the experience and navigating the process. Having said that, should any experience feel too intense, it is possible to mitigate the level of intensity by slowing down the breath (particularly the exhale phase). With breathwork, we enter a brave space of exploration and it’s also a safe space, where we have safety brakes that we can use to modulate our experience, simply by regulating our breath. This is not only useful during sessions but also in everyday life because effectively we are training our nervous system so we can expand our window of tolerance, become more resilient and gradually learn to be with higher levels of intensity in a grounded and present way.

As your breathwork practitioner, I am here to guide you and support you during the journey, and help you integrate whatever comes up during sessions. I offer a safe non-judgemental space for breathers to feel at ease and befriend all parts of themselves, to let go of fears and anxiety so they can fulfill their purpose in an embodied, grounded way.

After sessions, it is recommended to allow some time for grounding and to drink plenty of water to re-hydrate following periods of deep breathing. Please note that breathwork shows you who you truly are, it shows what is already within you. The medicine is in you and I recommend you take some time to integrate the journey and notice what’s present in your heart as you come out on the other side, as well as what emotional state or insights are present.
